Triptych-August 1972 is a large oil on canvas triptych by the British artist Francis Bacon (1909-1992). It was painted in memory of Bacon's lover George Dyer who committed suicide on 24 October 1971, the eve of the artist's retrospective at Paris's Grand Palais, then the highest honour Bacon had received. In the second, Triptych - August 1972, he has painted a grey section roughly in the centre of each of the three canvases. It resembles a wrestling ring, a platform or a theatre stage. The figures sit on the "stage", projecting out to the viewer, their forms highlighted by the black background.

Triptych August 1972 is one of what are traditionally referred to as Bacon's Black Triptychs, painted in the wake of his former lover George Dyer's death from suicide in 1971. In the middle panel, two men, presumably Dyer and Bacon, are locked in something halfway between a brawl and an embrace.
